November 5, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health will be offering a booster COVID-19 vaccine dose to eligible individuals starting the week of November 8, 2021. These changes are based on guidance from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI).
A booster dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine will be available to the groups listed below and must be received six months after second dose of two-dose series vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD) or six months after completion of one dose vaccine (Janssen):
- Adults living in long-term care or other congregate settings that provide care for seniors;
- Adults 70 years of age and older;
- Individuals who have only received two doses of the AstraZeneca Vaxzevria/COVISHIELD vaccine;
- Individuals who have only received one dose of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine;
- Adults who identify as Indigenous or who live in an Indigenous community; and
- Adults who are frontline health-care workers who have direct in-person contact with patients and who were vaccinated with a very short interval (less than 28 days).
Currently, there are no booster dose recommendations for individuals who are unable to receive an mRNA vaccine.
Individuals may receive the booster COVID-19 vaccine at an Eastern Health vaccine clinic, a participating pharmacy or a physician’s office. The public is reminded that they should not schedule an appointment for a vaccine if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Instead, they should complete a COVID-19 Assessment.
