Eastern Health and Quality of Care NL Highlight the Importance of Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance

November 21, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health and Quality of Care NL join organizations around the world this week to increase awareness and action to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, November 18 to 24, 2022.

“Eastern Health is committed to increasing understanding of the risks associated with antimicrobial and antibiotic resistance in health care, and an important part of that is raising awareness about appropriate antibiotic use,” said Debbie Walsh, vice president for clinical services at Eastern Health. “Unnecessary use and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, such as antivirals and antifungals, is increasing the serious problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Canada and around the world.”

Antibiotics and other antimicrobials have saved millions of lives since their discovery; but are gradually becoming less effective as bacteria and other microbes develop drug resistance. To help address AMR, since 2014, Eastern Health has led an Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee tasked with advocacy, education, and fostering responsible drug utilization. Initiatives Aim to Increase Capacity for Orthopaedic Surgery in Newfoundland and Labrador

November 9, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Today, the Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced two new initiatives to increase orthopaedic surgery capacity in Carbonear and St. Anthony. This builds on ongoing measures to help improve access to health care and reduce wait times for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Work is now underway to utilize operating room capacity at Carbonear General Hospital for inpatient joint replacement surgeries. Traditionally, orthopaedic services at this site were limited to same day surgeries only. To accommodate the addition of joint replacement surgeries, four beds will be opened to admit patients following their surgery. It is anticipated that approximately 160 joint replacement surgeries could be performed at this location annually. Recruitment and training of the required staff will begin in the near future, and the timeline to get surgeries up and running will depend on these factors.
