Update for Community Stakeholders and Partners: Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre

August 5, 2022

Eastern Health continues to focus on providing safe and quality care for the people of Bell Island. In response to current human resources challenges at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre, planning is ongoing in support of continuous safe, high-quality care in the event of a staffing shortage. At this time, no services at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre are affected and recruitment efforts for physicians and nurses are ongoing.

Long-term Care Services

Eastern Health has informed key stakeholders, including residents and their families, that in the case of a staff shortage, long-term care services will be relocated to another site. This is required to meet the Newfoundland and Labrador Operation Standards for Long Term Care and to ensure resident safety. There are no changes to long-term care services on Bell Island at this time and every effort is being made to ensure adequate staffing is in place.

Emergency Services

There are no changes to emergency services at this time and every effort is being made to ensure adequate staffing is in place.  If emergency services must be temporarily closed due to staffing levels, standard operating procedures regarding ambulance and ferry services have been developed and more information will be provided, if required. A temporary closure will only occur for the duration of time that the staff shortage exists.

More Information

At this time, there is no change in the services being offered at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre. Eastern Health will provide further information if the situation changes.
