March 21, 2023 – St. John’s, NL:The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that 10 new Family Care Teams will be established to help meet the primary care needs of residents throughout the province. Upon full implementation, these new Family Care Teams will provide access to primary care for up to 80,000 people.
Based on a needs assessment and available resources to support the team model, these teams will be established in the following areas:
- Bonavista;
- Brookfield/Centreville area;
- Clarenville;
- Conception Bay North;
- Deer Lake-White Bay;
- Gander;
- Grand Falls-Windsor;
- Labrador West;
- Port aux Basques; and
- St. John’s.

March 14, 2023 – St. John’s, NL:The Provincial Government continues to carry out its plan to improve health care in Newfoundland and Labrador with its approach to creating a more effective and efficient system that is focused on improved service delivery and health outcomes for the people of the province, with input from Health Accord NL. March 7, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: The Provincial Government continues to take meaningful action to reimagine health care in Newfoundland and Labrador based on recommendations of Health Accord NL. Central to the approach is creating a more effective and efficient system that is reflective of the current environment and focused on improved service delivery and health outcomes.
With this in mind, Eastern Health has added urgent care to the Dr. William H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne, in addition to its current status as a Primary Care Centre. This combined clinic will provide patients with primary health care, as well as urgent/same-day care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses. February 23, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that plans are underway for the construction of a new Cardiovascular and Stroke Institute that will be located at the Health Sciences Centre site in St. John’s.
The new facility, aimed at the prevention and management of cardiac and cerebrovascular disease, which includes what we commonly understand as strokes, will allow for enhanced cardiac, vascular, and stroke services and other clinical services. It will create a modern working environment, and will increase the number of operating rooms and inpatient beds at the Health Sciences Centre. (more…)

January 31, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: As the Provincial Government continues its efforts to find creative solutions to improve access to health care in Newfoundland and Labrador, a recently implemented pilot project is making a difference for cardiac patients.
The innovative approach allows patients from other regions of the province, who are in need of cardiac catheterization procedures only offered in the St. John’s region, to access them via a same-day fly-in/fly-out service. Spearheaded by the Eastern Regional Health Authority, patients are assessed based on clinical acuity, and those determined suitable for travel are flown into St. John’s for the procedure and returned to a health care facility in their region the same day.
