Eastern Health Implements Plan for Global Epidural Catheter Supply Shortage

July 29, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is responding to a global epidural catheter shortage. There continues to be limited stock globally and vendors are using an allocation model for distribution.

To date, Eastern Health has not experienced an interruption in service due to epidural catheter supply shortages; however, at this time, Eastern Health is implementing guidelines to conserve epidural catheters. Health-care teams will consult with patients regarding safe and effective pain control methods available. Patients are advised to consult with their physicians if they have questions or would like to discuss alternative options.

Communication from suppliers indicates that this global supply issue may continue throughout the summer. The provincial regional health authorities and provincial health Shared Services NL are working closely with our distributors and vendors to obtain adequate supplies for delivery of patient services.

Patients remain our top priority during this shortage and we will take all necessary measures to ensure they continue to receive high quality care.
