March 13, 2023 (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador) – Following a successful commercialization project funded by the Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network, Eastern Health has procured PolyUnity Tech Inc’s (PolyUnity) 3D printing solution for three years to help build supply chain resilience, decrease procurement costs, and enhance patient care. PolyUnity is a Newfoundland and Labrador based company that leverages digital manufacturing to build supply chain resiliency and reduce the cost, time and complexity of traditional health-care procurement. Eastern Health led the successful RFP process which will give CAN Health Network members, including some of Canada’s leading hospitals and health authorities, greater access to PolyUnity’s solution. March 8, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health was pleased this week to launch its first Client- and Family- Centred Care (CFCC) year in review. The 2022 impact report outlines the role of client and family advisors, the value they bring to the delivery of health-care services and the advancements in the Client- and Family-Centred Care (CFCC) approach to care, which was adopted by Eastern Health in 2017. February 2, 2023 – Happy-Valley-Goose Bay, NL: Labrador Grenfell-Health and Eastern Health officially opened a satellite breast screening centre located at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay today, as part of the Provincial Breast Screening Program. December 16, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health announced that it has started to complete hip and knee replacement surgery on an outpatient basis this week. This new, innovative approach to managing surgical waitlists for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries helps to reduce wait times and improve access to care for patients who are clinically eligible for this surgical approach. December 15, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health and its partners have awarded $44,250 in scholarships to support the pursuit of higher education and to advance health-care practice and knowledge in Newfoundland and Labrador. November 21, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health and Quality of Care NL join organizations around the world this week to increase awareness and action to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, November 18 to 24, 2022.
“Eastern Health is committed to increasing understanding of the risks associated with antimicrobial and antibiotic resistance in health care, and an important part of that is raising awareness about appropriate antibiotic use,” said Debbie Walsh, vice president for clinical services at Eastern Health. “Unnecessary use and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, such as antivirals and antifungals, is increasing the serious problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Canada and around the world.”
Antibiotics and other antimicrobials have saved millions of lives since their discovery; but are gradually becoming less effective as bacteria and other microbes develop drug resistance. To help address AMR, since 2014, Eastern Health has led an Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee tasked with advocacy, education, and fostering responsible drug utilization. (more…)
November 9, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Today, the Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced two new initiatives to increase orthopaedic surgery capacity in Carbonear and St. Anthony. This builds on ongoing measures to help improve access to health care and reduce wait times for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Work is now underway to utilize operating room capacity at Carbonear General Hospital for inpatient joint replacement surgeries. Traditionally, orthopaedic services at this site were limited to same day surgeries only. To accommodate the addition of joint replacement surgeries, four beds will be opened to admit patients following their surgery. It is anticipated that approximately 160 joint replacement surgeries could be performed at this location annually. Recruitment and training of the required staff will begin in the near future, and the timeline to get surgeries up and running will depend on these factors. (more…)

October 26, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is hosting its annual living lab health innovation summit on October 26 and 27, 2022 at the new Health Innovation and Acceleration Centre, a space for Eastern Health and its innovation partners. This year’s theme is ‘Driving Value and Innovative Solutions through Collaborative Community Care.’ Over the course of two days, keynote speakers, presenters and panel discussions will explore and report on innovative ways to deliver primary health-care services, and various sessions will highlight achievements with innovation activities taking place in Newfoundland and Labrador. October 21, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health announced today that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) (Collaborative) Program, offered by the Centre for Nursing Studies, has received seven-year approval status from the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) with a score of 100 per cent. The Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) has also received a seven-year accreditation status from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) in July of this year.
“These outstanding accreditation and approval outcomes affirm the high quality of nursing education offered in this province,” said Debbie Walsh, Vice President of Clinical Services & Chief Nursing Officer with the Centre for Nursing Studies. “Congratulations to faculty, staff, students and all those involved on this incredible achievement. August 31, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is advising that, as a result of its preliminary review into an issue first identified by Central Health with select mammography results, it has confirmed that some mammograms were being read on viewing workstations that do not meet technical standards for the review of mammography images. The review to date suggests this multi-patient occurrence presents a low risk to patients. (more…)

June 17, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is advising of the temporary move of the “Graces” monument from outside the main entrance of the Health Sciences Centre to outside of the neighbouring Nuclear and Molecular Medicine facility. June 8, 2022 – Grand Falls-Windsor, NL: Eastern Health’s first Clinical Research Satellite Site is now open in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. The site is among the first of its kind in the country and is part of the Canadian Remote Access Framework for Clinical Trials (CRAFT), which aims to broaden access to innovative treatment options made available through trials for eligible cancer patients, regardless of where they live in Canada. October 28, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is announcing the launch of a new and innovative community-based comprehensive respiratory care (CRC) program which will make it easier for patients with chronic respiratory disease to access care in the community. The referral-based program provides preventative care and fosters self-management through enhanced education and supports that have the potential to significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life for those living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma. Services are provided by a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) who is also a certified respiratory educator who works in collaboration with the patient’s primary care provider to treat the patient.
