Interruption to Telephone Services at Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre 

February 15, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that work is ongoing with the service provider to resolve interruptions to telephone services at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre.

During this telephone disruption, residents of Bell Island with a medical emergency who require an ambulance are advised of the following protocols:

  • Cell Phone: If you have a cell phone, please continue to call 911 for an ambulance.
  • Landline: If you have a landline, please call the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre at 709-488-2761 for an ambulance.

Update on Eastern Health Services During Adverse Weather

February 15, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of the following update to its services today due to adverse weather conditions:

  • Breastfeeding support groups are cancelled at the following locations:
    • Goulds Family Resource Centre (2:00 – 3:30 p.m.)
    • Bay Bulls Community Health Office (1:00 – 2:30 p.m.)
      These groups will resume as scheduled next week. Please reach out to your Public Health nurse directly, if needed.
  • The breastfeeding support group at Heart’s Delight Town Hall (1:30 – 2:30 p.m.) is proceeding.
  • The community walk-in clinic, located at 50 Mundy Pond Rd, St. John’s, will reopen at 12:00 p.m.
  • The blood collection booking office/phone line is closed today and will reopen tomorrow. Appointments can also be made online at https://www.easternhealth.ca/find-health-care/blood-collection/. Blood collection sites are open and appointments are proceeding.

  • Breastfeeding support groups are cancelled for the morning with an update later this morning. Please reach out to your Public Health nurse directly, if needed.
  • The community walk-in clinic, located at 50 Mundy Pond Rd, St. John’s, will be closed for the morning with an update later this morning.
  • Doorways (St. John’s) Counseling Services will be offered by phone or video only. Please call 709-752-4903 to arrange your phone or video session. Appointments are available between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

• The collaborative team clinic centre, located at 7 Pippy Place, St. John’s, will be closed.

• The COVID-19 vaccination clinic for children aged six months to 11 years old at Mount Pearl Square will be closed. Clients will be contacted to reschedule their appointments. In addition, clients may rebook online at www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/vaccine/gettheshot/.

• In addition, the planned closure of both the external and internal entrances to the emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, January 22, 2023 has been postponed. This closure will now be in effect as of Sunday, January 28, 2023. (more…)

Eastern Health Enacts Plan During Paramedic Job Action

January 20, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is advising the public that it has enacted plans to ensure continued emergency ambulance services to residents across the region during job action with a private operator.

Eastern Health reminds the public in the case of an emergency to call 911 as opposed to local ambulance operator numbers. NL 911 is ready to redirect calls to the next closest available ambulance provider. (more…)

Temporary Redirection of Walk-in Services at Waterford Hospital Psychiatric Assessment Unit to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital

December 22, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that emergency walk-in services normally available at the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at the Waterford Hospital will be temporarily redirected to the emergency department at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital from Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. to Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.

As there will be no walk-in service available at the PAU during this time, patients are advised to present to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital where initial assessments will be available. Following initial assessment, patients may still be transferred to the PAU for psychiatric consultation, as needed. (more…)

Eastern Health Provides Update on Privacy Breach

December 8, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is providing an update on the privacy breach as a result of the October 2021 cyber-attack that impacted health-care information technology (IT) systems across the province.

In November 2021, Eastern Health first notified the public of a breach of some personal information and personal health information. As the investigation continued and subsequent updates were provided, Eastern Health advised in March 2022 that further patient health and employee information was taken by an unauthorized party.

At that time, the public was informed that this breach included a network drive containing over 200,000 files and that a review was being undertaken to determine the number of files containing personal health or personal information. The review of the network drive is now complete and indicates that approximately 20,000 of these files require notification for approximately 31,500 affected individuals. The majority of those impacted are patients, while approximately 280 are staff or former staff members. (more…)


Temporary Changes to Public Parking at Health Sciences Centre

December 7, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public of temporary changes to public parking at the Health Sciences Complex due to the construction for the recently announced emergency expansion project.  These changes will be effective as of Monday, December 12, 2022.

Public parking, previously available in the lower half of the large lot in front of the Health Sciences Centre (located on the left of the entrance on Clinch Crescent), will now be available across the street to the left of the helipad. Community Walk-In Clinic in St. John’s Dedicates Some Appointments for Pediatric Illness

December 6, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that it is dedicating a number of appointments at the community walk-in clinic at 50 Mundy Pond Rd, St. John’s, specifically for children in response to the increase in pediatric respiratory illness.

Any children who are assessed at the walk-in clinic as having symptoms of respiratory illness will be treated on a priority basis. Eastern Health will monitor community need daily and every effort will be made to accommodate patients who present to the clinic, although appointment numbers will be limited based on the number of available providers. December 2, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of temporary changes to services for the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre, effective Monday, December 5, 2022. At this time, some routine surgeries and appointments are being cancelled. Patients will be contacted directly if their surgery/appointment is impacted and will be rescheduled for a later date.

These changes are due to an increase in pediatric presentations to the emergency department and admissions due to respiratory illnesses. Eastern Health staff and physicians continue to meet demand, by mobilizing additional human resources, waiting areas and treatment spaces, to help support the emergency department and in-patient units. Gifts will be donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to families throughout the region.

The 12th annual Pack the Back drive for toys, food, and clothing drive continues this Saturday, December 3, 2022. Donations will be collected at the following Walmart store locations:

Patients whose appointments are cancelled are asked to re-book through the online appointment booking system.

Patients requiring urgent, INR or treatment-dependent blood work, should proceed to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital blood collection.

Temporary Schedule for Emergency Services at U.S. Memorial Health Centre

November 4, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that U.S. Memorial Health Centre in St. Lawrence has implemented a four-week temporary schedule for emergency services. This schedule allows U.S. Memorial Health Centre to maximize available human resources in order to continue to offer both emergency services and appointment-based physician clinics.

Effective November 7 to December 4, 2022:

Emergency services will be CLOSED on Tuesday and Thursday starting at 8:00 a.m. for 24 hours (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following day);

Emergency services will remain OPEN on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m. for 24 hours (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following day).

During emergency service closures, appointments for primary health-care visits will continue. Family practice clinics and outpatient laboratory services, such as blood collection and X-ray, are available by appointment at the U.S. Memorial Health Centre. November 4, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that the emergency services at the Dr. William H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne will be temporarily closed due to current human resource challenges. The temporary closure will take place from:

Monday, November 7 at 8:00 a.m. to Monday, November 14 at 8:00 a.m.
