October 21, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Three regional health authorities (Eastern Health, Labrador-Grenfell Health and Western Health) advised today that the review of mammography images read on 3-megapixel monitors instead of 5-megapixel monitors is now completed and follow-up with patients who required further assessment is ongoing.
Of 10,883 patients who had their mammogram images reviewed, 10,845 patients have been reviewed with no change. Of the 38 patients who require further assessment, 20 of these patients have had their follow up complete with no change to their reports. The other 18 patients are in various stages of follow-up which includes the following steps:
- contacted patients’ primary health-care providers;
- contacted patients by phone;
- contacted patients with a follow-up letter outlining next steps.

October 13, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Three regional health authorities (Eastern Health, Labrador-Grenfell Health and Western Health) advised today that the review of mammography images read on 3-megapixel monitors instead of 5-megapixel monitors is near completion. On August 23, 2022, the three regional health authorities initiated this review and are continuing to take all the required steps to gather information including conducting a multi-RHA internal quality review, which will be completed in a timely and thorough manner.

Of 10,883 patients, 10,845 patients have been reviewed with no change, with 38 patients who require further assessment. The percentage of patients requiring follow-up remains stable at 0.3 per cent. September 15, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Three regional health authorities (Eastern Health, Labrador-Grenfell Health and Western Health) are providing an update on the ongoing mammography review for patients as reported on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. A coordinated quality review process has now been initiated at all three regional health authorities to ensure that mammography images have been viewed on workstations that meet technical standards. August 23, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is advising we are conducting a preliminary review given a potential issue identified by Central Health with select mammography results. Eastern Health will provide a public update early next week on whether further analysis is required.
Eastern Health appreciates the importance of completing this work in a timely manner to address any potential concerns of patients, and thanks them for their patience. At this time, patients do not need to contact their primary care provider or the regional health authority.

October 6, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that Carbonear General Hospital is currently experiencing problems with its inbound and outbound phone lines. The public are able to call the main switchboard at (709) 945-6246. In addition, Carbonear residents needing to call the fire department, should dial 911 as the direct lines are also experiencing problems. Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavillion is unaffected. Eastern Health is currently working to determine the cause of the interruption to the phone lines. (more…)
