Possible Delay in Payment for Eastern Health Clients

September 29, 2022 – St. John’s, NL Eastern Health is advising individuals and businesses of a possible delay in payment due to the new banking holiday observed for Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30.

Clients of the Community Support Program and the Mental Health and Addictions Program who receive semi-monthly recurring payments from Eastern Heath, dated September 30, 2022, may not receive payments until Monday, October 3, 2022.

Eastern Health apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks individuals for their understanding at this time.

Phone Lines Impacted at Carbonear General Hospital

October 6, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public that Carbonear General Hospital is currently experiencing problems with its inbound and outbound phone lines. The public are able to call the main switchboard at (709) 945-6246. In addition, Carbonear residents needing to call the fire department, should dial 911 as the direct lines are also experiencing problems. Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavillion is unaffected. Patients with Emergency Medical Needs Only Advised to Proceed to Emergency Departments in St. John’s

September 10, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Emergency rooms at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s are experiencing unprecedented pressures resulting in long wait times for patients. Eastern Health reminds individuals who are not experiencing a medical emergency to consider alternate options before proceeding to an emergency department.

This approach will help to alleviate long wait times by patients and also helps staff to focus on the delivery of safe and quality care for individuals who present with critical medical conditions, including those who experience serious injuries, heart attacks, strokes and difficulty breathing. Parking Payment System Updated at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and Dr. L.A. Miller Centre

May 31, 2023: Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services advises that, effective Thursday, June 1, 2023, a new pay-as-you-go parking system will be implemented at hospital public parking lots located at both St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre. This system will replace the former metered system at both sites. The parking rate at both sites will be $0.75/hour. Signage is in place to assist. Opening of Temporary Drive-Through COVID-19 Testing Clinic for Travellers

June 30, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public of a new temporary drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic for travellers who require a COVID-19 test upon arrival to the St. John’s International Airport and other entry points into the region. The testing clinic, which is by appointment only, will open on July 1, 2021, and hours of operation are 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., seven days a week.(*Effective July 11, 2021, the hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week, but are subject to change based on demand.) Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services Offers COVID-19 Spring Booster Vaccinations

April 14, 2023:  Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services advises that spring COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be available throughout the province beginning on April 17, 2023. COVID-19 bivalent vaccine will be offered as a spring booster dose to those individuals who are eligible:

  • Adults 80 years of age and older;
  • Adult residents of long-term care facilities and other senior congregate living facilities;
  • Adults 18 years of age and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised; and
  • Adults 65 to 79 years of age, particularly if they do not have a known prior history of COVID-19 infection.

New Web Portal Introduced for Credit Monitoring and Identity Theft Protection Services

June 8, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health is advising the public that a new Equifax Canada web portal for current and former clients to enroll in credit monitoring and identity theft protection services is now available. The new portal was created as an additional step to assist clients with the enrollment process. New Family Care Teams Announced for Newfoundland and Labrador

March 21, 2023 – St. John’s, NL:The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that 10 new Family Care Teams will be established to help meet the primary care needs of residents throughout the province. Upon full implementation, these new Family Care Teams will provide access to primary care for up to 80,000 people.

Based on a needs assessment and available resources to support the team model, these teams will be established in the following areas:

  • Bonavista;
  • Brookfield/Centreville area;
  • Clarenville;
  • Conception Bay North;
  • Deer Lake-White Bay;
  • Gander;
  • Grand Falls-Windsor;
  • Labrador West;
  • Port aux Basques; and
  • St. John’s.

New Cardiovascular and Stroke Institute Announced for Newfoundland and Labrador

February 23, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that plans are underway for the construction of a new Cardiovascular and Stroke Institute that will be located at the Health Sciences Centre site in St. John’s.

The new facility, aimed at the prevention and management of cardiac and cerebrovascular disease, which includes what we commonly understand as strokes, will allow for enhanced cardiac, vascular, and stroke services and other clinical services. It will create a modern working environment, and will increase the number of operating rooms and inpatient beds at the Health Sciences Centre. Initiatives Aim to Increase Capacity for Orthopaedic Surgery in Newfoundland and Labrador

November 9, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Today, the Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced two new initiatives to increase orthopaedic surgery capacity in Carbonear and St. Anthony. This builds on ongoing measures to help improve access to health care and reduce wait times for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Work is now underway to utilize operating room capacity at Carbonear General Hospital for inpatient joint replacement surgeries. Traditionally, orthopaedic services at this site were limited to same day surgeries only. To accommodate the addition of joint replacement surgeries, four beds will be opened to admit patients following their surgery. It is anticipated that approximately 160 joint replacement surgeries could be performed at this location annually. Recruitment and training of the required staff will begin in the near future, and the timeline to get surgeries up and running will depend on these factors. Individuals 50 Years and Over Now Eligible for Second Booster of COVID-19 Vaccine 

July 19, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public that individuals 50 years and over are now eligible to book appointments for a second booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine.  

Individuals may book appointments at clinics throughout the Eastern Health region by visiting www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/vaccine/gettheshot/. For some vaccination clinics, appointments may be currently booked to capacity based on initial high demand. Appointments will continue to be added to the online booking system regularly and individuals are advised to continue to check availability.

First Surgeries Performed in St. Anthony Under Travelling Orthopaedic Program

January 25, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: The travelling orthopaedic team from Eastern Health has completed its first joint replacement surgery at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. Announced last fall as a measure to address wait times for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries in Newfoundland and Labrador, the initiative has the potential to accommodate approximately 140 surgeries at this site annually.

August 23, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health is advising we are conducting a preliminary review given a potential issue identified by Central Health with select mammography results. Eastern Health will provide a public update early next week on whether further analysis is required.

Eastern Health to Hold Annual General Meeting

During the meeting, an overview of the accomplishments and challenges relating to Eastern Health’s strategic priorities during the 2021-22 fiscal year will be presented by Leslie O’Reilly, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Kenneth Baird, President and CEO (interim) of Eastern Health. The past fiscal year marked the completion of the second year of Putting Excellence into Action, Eastern Health’s Strategic Plan for 2020-23. Eastern Health to Begin Providing Monkeypox Vaccine to Eligible Individuals

August 19, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health is providing the Imvamune vaccine for the Monkeypox virus to eligible individuals starting today. This is based on the epidemiology of the outbreak in Canada, and following the lead of other jurisdictions in the country. Eligible individuals include:

  • Two-spirit people, transgender people, and cisgender males who self-identify as belonging to the gay, bisexual, queer, and men who have sex with men community, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Have had sex with two or more partners in the last 90 days, or are planning to do so;
    • Have received a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection in the last six months;
    • Have attended, worked, or volunteered in venues or other locations for sexual contact within the past 90 days or may be planning to do so, whether in or outside of the province.

Eastern Health Services Relocating from Taylor Building to Carbonear Community Services Building

Eastern Health services offered which are relocating to the new location include public health, community supports, intervention services, mental health and addictions, and speech-language pathology services. As of Monday, October 3, 2022, individuals with existing appointments should proceed to the Carbonear Community Services Building, 15a Industrial Crescent, Carbonear.

As a result of the location change, there will be a two-hour telephone service interruption between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. During this time, telephone lines will also be transferred to the new location and the public is advised not to leave voicemails for staff at the Taylor Centre as they will not be received.

March 16, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of the following update to its services for the remainder of the day (Wednesday, March 16, 2023) due to adverse weather conditions:

  • Doorways Counselling Services in St. John’s and all rural areas, will be offered by phone or video due to adverse weather condition. To arrange an appointment, please visit the Doorways website for phone numbers.
  • Urgent care services at the Dr. William H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne are closed. Patients with a medical emergency who require an ambulance should call 911 and those who feel they have a serious or urgent medical problem should proceed to the nearest open emergency department in Carbonear, Placentia or St. John’s.

January 21, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of the following service changes for today, Saturday, January 21, 2023, due to adverse weather this weekend:

• The community walk-in clinic, located at 50 Mundy Pond Rd, St. John’s, will be closed.

• The collaborative team clinic centre, located at 7 Pippy Place, St. John’s, will be closed.

• The COVID-19 vaccination clinic for children aged six months to 11 years old at Mount Pearl Square will be closed. Clients will be contacted to reschedule their appointments. In addition, clients may rebook online at www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/vaccine/gettheshot/.

• In addition, the planned closure of both the external and internal entrances to the emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, January 22, 2023 has been postponed. January 10, 2023– St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of the following service changes due to adverse weather today (January 10, 2023):

  • Breastfeeding support groups are cancelled for today at the following locations:
    • Placentia Public Library (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    • CBS Arena (2:00 – 3:00 p.m.)
    • Thomas Line Community Centre (2:00 – 3:30 p.m.)

  • Mass vaccination clinic at Mount Pearl Square will close at 12:00 p.m.
