From 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2022 and Sunday, October 2, 2022, the emergency and ambulance entrances will be accessible from the St. Clare Avenue side only due to construction in the area.

Temporary Changes to Services at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre

December 2, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of temporary changes to services for the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre, effective Monday, December 5, 2022. At this time, some routine surgeries and appointments are being cancelled. Patients will be contacted directly if their surgery/appointment is impacted and will be rescheduled for a later date.

These changes are due to an increase in pediatric presentations to the emergency department and admissions due to respiratory illnesses. Eastern Health staff and physicians continue to meet demand, by mobilizing additional human resources, waiting areas and treatment spaces, to help support the emergency department and in-patient units. December 7, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public of temporary changes to public parking at the Health Sciences Complex due to the construction for the recently announced emergency expansion project.  These changes will be effective as of Monday, December 12, 2022.

Public parking, previously available in the lower half of the large lot in front of the Health Sciences Centre (located on the left of the entrance on Clinch Crescent), will now be available across the street to the left of the helipad. April 22, 2023: Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services advises the public that work to replace the Computed Tomography (CT) medical imaging machine at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre will begin on Monday, April 24, 2023. As a result, the Child Rehabilitation entrance is closed.

This work is currently scheduled to take place from Friday, March 31, 2023, at 7:00 a.m. to Monday April 3, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. During this time, the public is advised to use the second floor Staff Entrance, Door #5 to access the emergency department; this entrance is located in the same area and is to the left of the emergency room doors. Temporary Changes to Cafeteria Services at Health Sciences Centre

May 11, 2023: Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services advises the public of temporary changes to cafeteria services at the Health Sciences Centre due to a broken water pipe in the kitchen area of the cafeteria. As a result, retail food offerings at the Health Sciences Centre will be temporarily limited. Hospital inpatient food services are not affected.

April 14, 2023: Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services advises the public of a temporary change to the hours of operation for urgent care services at Dr. William H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne.  While recruitment efforts are ongoing, urgent care will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and is currently unavailable on Mondays until appropriate clinical staff are recruited into positions.

Of 10,883 patients, 5,826 patients have been reviewed with no change, with 18 patients who require further assessment. The percentage of patients requiring follow-up remains low at 0.3 per cent.

Regional Health Authorities Following Up with Mammography Patients

October 21, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Three regional health authorities (Eastern Health, Labrador-Grenfell Health and Western Health) advised today that the review of mammography images read on 3-megapixel monitors instead of 5-megapixel monitors is now completed and follow-up with patients who required further assessment is ongoing.

Of 10,883 patients who had their mammogram images reviewed, 10,845 patients have been reviewed with no change. Of the 38 patients who require further assessment, 20 of these patients have had their follow up complete with no change to their reports. The other 18 patients are in various stages of follow-up which includes the following steps:

  • contacted patients’ primary health-care providers;
  • contacted patients by phone;
  • contacted patients with a follow-up letter outlining next steps.

On August 23, 2022, the three regional health authorities initiated this review and are continuing to take all the required steps to gather information including conducting a multi-RHA internal quality review, which will be completed in a timely and thorough manner.

Reconfiguration of Visitor and Staff Parking Lots at Dr. L.A. Miller Centre

June 18, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of a reconfiguration in parking lot locations at Dr. L.A. Miller Centre effective Monday, June 21, 2021. The current ‘visitor only’ parking lot will be relocated to the 9A/C parking lot near the Southcott Hall main block, and staff who previously parked at the 9A/C parking lot will move to the former ‘visitor only’ parking lot. Enhancing supply chain with rapid product design, digital inventory, and additive manufacturing through PolyUnity Tech Inc.

March 13, 2023 (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador) – Following a successful commercialization project funded by the Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network, Eastern Health has procured PolyUnity Tech Inc’s (PolyUnity) 3D printing solution for three years to help build supply chain resilience, decrease procurement costs, and enhance patient care. PolyUnity is a Newfoundland and Labrador based company that leverages digital manufacturing to build supply chain resiliency and reduce the cost, time and complexity of traditional health-care procurement. Eastern Health led the successful RFP process which will give CAN Health Network members, including some of Canada’s leading hospitals and health authorities, greater access to PolyUnity’s solution.
