Eastern Health Reviewing Mammogram Results of Multi-Patient Occurrence

August 31, 2022 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health is advising that, as a result of its preliminary review into an issue first identified by Central Health with select mammography results, it has confirmed that some mammograms were being read on viewing workstations that do not meet technical standards for the review of mammography images. September 13, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public that visitation continues to be temporarily suspended at Unit 2 South at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion while general visitation is now open to the remainder of the facility. January 28, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of updates to temporary visitor restrictions at facilities and sites across the region, as per provincial guidelines. All health-care facilities remain closed for general visitation with the exception of one support person for each resident/patient, including inpatients in a hospital setting and residents of long-term care homes, personal care homes, community care homes and assisted living facilities. The general public are reminded not to visit any patients or residents during this time unless they are the designated support person for the patient/resident they are visiting. July 22, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises that, in line with provincial guidelines, general visitation is permitted, effective Friday, July 23, for all provincially-operated acute care facilities, health centres and long-term care facilities as well as privately-operated long-term care homes, personal care homes, and community care homes. While restrictions are eased, alternatives to in-person visiting are encouraged such as virtual visits, outdoor visits when possible, and phone calls when possible.

Eastern Health Provides Update on Privacy Breach

December 8, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health is providing an update on the privacy breach as a result of the October 2021 cyber-attack that impacted health-care information technology (IT) systems across the province.

In November 2021, Eastern Health first notified the public of a breach of some personal information and personal health information. As the investigation continued and subsequent updates were provided, Eastern Health advised in March 2022 that further patient health and employee information was taken by an unauthorized party.

At that time, the public was informed that this breach included a network drive containing over 200,000 files and that a review was being undertaken to determine the number of files containing personal health or personal information. The review of the network drive is now complete and indicates that approximately 20,000 of these files require notification for approximately 31,500 affected individuals. Eastern Health Provides Update on Outpatient Laboratory Services

January 7, 2022 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises the public of the continuation of temporary changes to outpatient laboratory services (e.g. blood collection) across the region for January 10-14, 2022. These changes will enable resources to be redeployed to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic response.

  • All non-urgent appointments have been cancelled.
  • Urgent/emergent laboratory testing and services will continue.
  • Eastern Health’s outpatient blood collection sites are restricted to urgent blood collection only. This includes blood testing for patients requiring: INRs (international normalized ratios), therapeutic drug-level monitoring testing and, for cancer care patients, monitoring of cancer clinic profiles and other required cancer-related testing.

March 28, 2023 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health advises that it is modifying its approach to providing COVID-19 vaccine and boosters based on current demand at various locations. By April 1, 2023, clinics will be located in Eastern Health community health offices throughout the region. Eastern Health Lifts Visitor Restrictions on the Burin Peninsula

November 8, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public that visitor restrictions have been lifted and that general visitation is now open for hospital patients and long-term care and personal care home residents at all facilities and sites on the Burin Peninsula. Visitor restrictions were originally implemented in this area on October 22 due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and ongoing investigation in the area. October 15, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public that visitor restrictions have been lifted at all units at Saint Luke’s Homes and at Blue Crest Nursing Home. Visiting hours are determined by facility and visitors/support persons are advised to contact the patient’s/resident’s health-care team for further information. Eastern Health Lifts Visitor Restrictions at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion

September 20, 2021 – St. John’s, NL:  Eastern Health advises the public that visitor restrictions have been lifted and that general visitation is now open at unit 2 South at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion. Visitor restrictions were originally implemented on September 9 following a case of COVID-19 identified in the Eastern Health region. Eastern Health Lifts Visitor Restrictions at Carbonear General Hospital

Eastern Health Launches Virtual Care Survey

June 2, 2021 – St. John’s, NL: Eastern Health today launched a virtual care survey to seek feedback from members of the public about their experiences with virtual care appointments within the health-care setting. Virtual care refers to any health-care appointment, not in-person, which was conducted via computer (desktop or laptop), telephone (landline or cell phone) or another mobile device (e.g. iPad, tablet). The perspectives gathered will provide valuable feedback and be used to help improve the patient experience with virtual care technologies in the future.
